Social Enterprises and Sustainability
A Critical Exploration
Introduction
Making a clear departure from for-profit counterparts, the core purpose of social enterprises (SEs) is to deliver a social good or solve social problems. This chapter critically explores the interlocking relationship of SEs and sustainability, examining how social impact and financial viability intertwine within the business models of these organizations.
Conceptual Framework
The proposed conceptual framework comprises two layers:
- Social Layer: This layer encompasses the organization's social mission, objectives, and impact on the community it serves.
- Business Model Layer: This layer explores the financial sustainability of the SE, revenue models, cost structure, and growth strategies.
The interplay between these layers highlights the complex challenges and opportunities facing SEs as they navigate the tension between social impact and financial viability.
