Lightning Re-Acquire McDonagh
Cap Hit a Concern for Tampa Bay
McDonagh's Salary Raises Eyebrows
The Tampa Bay Lightning have brought back veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh, but the move comes with a hefty cap hit that has the team up against the salary ceiling. McDonagh, 34, is set to earn $8.4 million in 2023-24, with a cap hit of $6.75 million.
The Lightning acquired McDonagh from the Nashville Predators in a trade, sending a first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round pick in 2024 to Nashville. The Lightning are now over the salary cap, and general manager Julien Brisebois will have to make some roster moves to get under the limit by the start of the season.
McDonagh is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Lightning, winning the Cup in 2020 and 2021. He is a physical presence on the blue line and is known for his leadership and shot-blocking ability.
